Stainless Sheet/Plate 316/316L 2B is renowned for its high strength and outstanding corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments. Compared to 304 stainless steel, 316 exhibits slightly higher strength and is widely regarded as a marine-grade metal due to its exceptional performance in marine conditions.
Moreover, 316 stainless steel maintains its properties even in extreme temperatures, whether cryogenic or high. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including oil and petroleum equipment, aerospace components, food processing machinery, pulp and paper processing equipment, textiles, architectural structures, and marine equipment.
Features:
Chromium and Nickel Content:
- 304 Stainless Steel: Contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, making it an 18/8 steel.
- 316 Stainless Steel: Contains slightly less chromium but higher nickel content at 10%. Additionally, it includes 2% molybdenum, which is absent in 304.
Effect on Corrosion Resistance:
- Both alloys benefit from high chromium and nickel content, which enhance their corrosion resistance.
- The presence of molybdenum in 316 stainless steel provides superior corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-rich environments like marine and coastal areas.
- Due to this, 316 stainless steel is often preferred for applications where corrosion resistance is paramount.
Mechanical Properties:
- The differences in chemical composition between 304 and 316 stainless steel can impact their mechanical properties.
- While both alloys offer good strength and formability, the addition of molybdenum in 316 stainless steel may result in slightly improved mechanical properties, particularly in terms of corrosion resistance and durability.
